Families & Amputees In Motion (FAIM) is incorporated by the State of Illinois as a not-for-profit organization and is staffed by volunteers. This group originated in 1979 for the purpose of providing support and information to children and adults who have experienced the loss of limb through accident, disease, or deficiency at birth.
FAIM's goals are to promote positive adaptation to limb loss, to empower amputees to reach their optimum level of functioning, and to improve perceptions of amputees. We accomplish these goals by providing the following services free of charge for individuals who have experienced limb loss, their family members and persons involved in their care:
Peer Support
Quarterly Newsletter
Peer Training Program
Annual Picnic
Educational Programs
Disability Awareness Support
Information/Resources
Fun and Friendship
Amputation is an experience involving many emotions and adjustments. FAIM members, having known those feelings and having made the necessary adaptations, are committed to helping others in similar situations. To that end, FAIM has developed a peer support program in which trained volunteers, upon request from a new amputee, make contact and provide support, answer questions, share feelings and concerns and sometimes simply listen. FAIM considers peer support to be its primary consideration and most important service.
